The First World War

This was a trial game using HOTT variant rules Hordes in the Trenches, which are available at:

It is set in Mesopotamia, early in the British involvement there. The British are conducting a reconaissance in force, with a battalion of infantry, a cavalry regiment and their attendant machine-guns. They have bumped into two Turkish battalions - also with enough MGs - guarding a supply depot.

The terrain is flat and open, with areas of lower-lying ground which are deep mud. These count as bad going for movement but open for shooting. The British go for the direct approach, the infantry going straight for the Turkish centre in a column. The cavalry go wide to the right (above).

One Turkish battalion, sighting the cavalry, moves off into a muddy area to avoid being caught in the open by cavalry. This leave their centre quite exposed with the supply depot being screened only by a MG company and the HQ company (above).

This turns out to be enough, though. The British infantry slowly deploy in the mud just out of MG range and attack. The Turkish machine-guns cause heavy losses but the British rally and attack again, eventually taking the MGs with the bayonet. Out on the British right the cavalry dismount at a safe distance and proceed on foot. They fail to make any progress against the Turks in the marsh. With the MG in the village now enfilading the infantry in the centre and the cavalry attack stalled the British commander calls off the attack and withdraws.

Realistic enough I think. Lessons learned - do not attack machine-guns across open ground; do not attack without superior numbers.

At the opposite end of the scale, this is a trench raid in 28mm. The Germans are attacking a British trench, at night of course. The beautiful map and the figures are all by Mr. D- W-.

The Germans get close to the trench without being spotted. A couple have got lost and left behind, however.

The Germans are right at the end of the trench, but they've been spotted. They start to throw grenades but in the dark they go astray.

Two Germans, nearest the camera, head home with a prisoner they found cowering at the bottom of the trench. In the centre several Germans are down, wounded or dead, as their own grenades fall short and the British bring the Lewis gun into action.

The Germans are heading home, taking one prisoner but leaving several dead and wounded behind and the British mortar and MG untouched. Not a great success.
